Suicide Prevention

940 Coloradans died by suicide in 2009, making Colorado the state with the sixth highest rate of suicide in the nation.

The rate of teen suicide has dramatically increased nationwide in recent years.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth ages 15-24.

For over 20 years, Jefferson Center has been the facilitating agency of the Suicide Prevention Coalition, a community collaboration of stakeholders from Jefferson, Clear Creek, and Gilpin Counties, addressing suicide prevention issues in their communities.

Valuable resources including warning signs, what to do, what not to do, resources, and suggestions for survivors are provided through materials available to organizations, at events throughout the community, and on the website www.endteensuicide.org. This Jefferson Center website receives more than 30,000 views each year.

One of the goals of the suicide prevention program is to recruit "gatekeepers" in the community to participate in suicide prevention workshops through LivingWorks ASIST Suicide Intervention Skills Workshop and SafeTALK Suicide Alertness Training models, as well as the QPR Institutes Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper Training. Information Sessions highlighting the unique risk factors facing the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Communities and the Latino/Hispanic Communities have also been created.

Jefferson Center would like to thank the following funders for supporting Teen Suicide Prevention Services.
